Alex grew up in a household where he was taught the importance of self‑reliance and self‑defense from a young age, supported by a family history of military service and a hunting tradition that made firearms a normal part of life. He began shooting early, hunted small game throughout his teens, and expanded into defensive training in his twenties and thirties.
Today he has developed broad experience with a wide range of firearms and weapon systems, and is active at the Boulder Valley Sportsmen Association in Green Lane, PA, where he offers courses, helps run range programs, and serves on the board of directors. He continues to train to advance his own skills and deepen his expertise, passing that knowledge on to his clients through disciplined, practical, and approachable instruction.
His interest in technology and history, his background as a former competitive swimmer and coach, and his master’s‑level education in software engineering together shape the balanced, analytical teaching style he brings to every class.

Alex founded Applied Arms Services, LLC in January 2023 with a guiding philosophy rooted in the enduring principles of Sun Tzu's The Art of War: the supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting, invincibility lies in the defense, and true mastery is measured not by the battles won but by the conflicts avoided. Drawing on a lifetime of experience with firearms, defensive training, and a deep study of technology and history, he teaches that the mind is the final weapon — that preparation, positioning, situational awareness, and judgment matter as much as the tool in your hand.
His instruction emphasizes disciplined skill development, responsible decision‑making, and the understanding that being armed is a mindset, not a possession: that just because you can act does not mean you should, and that the most effective defender is the one fully prepared to fight yet committed to avoiding the fight whenever possible.
